Here is the quadcopter that can do it all, it can move along the surface of the water like a boat, then if needed it can submerge and explore underwater like a submarine. The Oakland University’s loon copter, like its namesake, can fly, land on the water to see what is under the surface, and then if needed dive down below and explore. The loon can fly in the same fashion as any other quadcopter and initially it will land and float when it comes to rest on the water, at this point it can simply sit in one spot or use its props to push itself along the surface. When the operator wants it to submerge they will hit a switch that pumps water into its buoyancy chamber which causes it to sink. Instead of submerging straight down, the loon actually tips to one side has it sinks. Now the operator can reengage the props and allowed them to pull the quad through the water. They can turn to either side, dive or ascend all using the water buoyancy, and the best part, it can record video or gather data as it does this. When it is time to get airborne again, it can pump the water out of its buoyancy chamber causing it to float back to the surface and swing up into takeoff position.
